 Press Release
Facebook Unjustly Closes the Page of the Women’s Section in the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir for the 3rd Time to Censor the Voices of Muslim Women Calling for the System of Islam

On Friday 5th June 2020, Facebook once again unjustly closed down the English page of the Women’s Section in the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir with no valid justification. This is the third time the Facebook administration has taken this move, having failed to provide us any reason for their previous closure of our pages, even though requested. As the Women’s Section in the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir, our pages are dedicated to highlighting the numerous injustices and forms of oppression that women and children face globally, as well as explaining their ideological and systemic causes, including the detrimental impact of capitalist and liberal values, laws and systems. They also aim to dismantle the age-old lies regarding women’s oppression under Islam, and present the truth of how the laws of the Khilafah (Caliphate) system based upon the method of the Prophethood achieve justice and contains the treatments for political, economic and social problems they face today. Our pages are also meticulous in ensuring all posts are based on accurate and sound information from respected sources, and that nothing indecent, immoral, divisive or harmful is promoted.

Facebook’s habit of repeatedly closing our pages simply strengthens the case against liberalism by highlighting further its hypocritical nature and inability to defend its beliefs through strength of argument or intellectually take on the debate against Islam. Instead, it resorts to censuring and silencing of the truth. Furthermore, while criticised by many for failing to take down posts by Trump and others which constitute hate-speech, misinformation and incitement to violence, Facebook chooses instead to target pages which seek to oppose racist, sexist, Islamophobic and divisive views as well as destructive colonial agendas in the world. This stance, of taking the side of the oppressors rather than the oppressed reflects a company which is accepting of the perpetuation of injustices against women and others. It also reflects a company which is happy with the continuation of the promotion of western orientalist and imperial legacies and false narratives and misinformation against the culture of other nations, in particular Islam. It truly pulls back the curtain of the misled belief that Facebook is an objective and neutral platform for fair and open debate of ideas.

Clearly, there can be no other reason for this discriminatory, groundless closure of our pages other than the fact that the concept of Muslim women calling for Islam as their path to liberation from oppression rather than Western Liberalism, goes against their terms and policies! Through this action, Facebook joins the uncoveted category of authoritarian regimes and extremist secular governments who have sought to marginalize and mute through draconian policies, the voices of Muslim women who reject secular liberalism and who embrace Islam as the basis of their identity and seek real change in their lands through its time-tested credible laws and system. However, we refuse to be silenced!

We call all those who genuinely wish to end the oppression facing millions of women globally and who wish to establish true prosperity, security and progress in their lands to support our new page by liking, sharing and following it:
