Denmark negotiated this so-called defence reservation as part of its membership of the EU, allowing it to opt out of military missions. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was the catalyst that started the debate in Danish media and politics, and a referendum was announced shortly thereafter. 66% of voters voted for abolishing these reservations in order to involve Denmark in European military policies to a greater extent.
