THE NIQAB DEBATE - PART 2 How Should Muslims Respond to the Attack on the Niqab?

  • Published in Analysis
  •   |

Part 1 of this article discussed how Muslims should not argue against niqab bans or for the right to practice any part of our deen on the basis of ‘personal freedom' or ‘human rights' which contradict the Islamic texts. This is because such values have their origins from the secular way of life and liberal ideals that believe that God and religion should have no say in the organization of life's affairs and that individuals should be permitted to perform actions, legislate, and live their lives according to their own whims and desires. Islam however states that Allah (swt) is the sole Legislator in all spheres of life and that the believers should perform actions and fulfil their desires according to His Commands alone. In addition, secular governments and institutions have repeatedly demonstrated the erratic, unpredictable, and hypocritical manner by which they implement such values and that they will guarantee them only for those who tow the secular line. Therefore Muslims should reject such non-Islamic ideas and not use them as the basis to formulate their arguments against attacks on their deen or to protect the right to practice their Islamic beliefs.

Part 2 of this article now addresses how Muslims should respond to this attack on the niqab.

As Muslims, our response to the attack on the niqab or any part of our deen must be to dispel the fears and misconceptions that lead to the negative views towards our deen amongst the public. For example, false accusations such as large swathes of Muslim girls and women being forced to wear the Islamic dress, or that the niqab divides communities, poses a security threat, makes the woman inferior to the man, or prevents women from playing an active part within the society must be challenged and shown to be untrue. In doing this, we should not be fearful of explaining that Islam is fundamentally different in its belief, values and laws from the Western secular liberal way of life and system, but to then go on to explain the outcomes that the whole body of Islamic laws achieve for society. For example, when talking about the Islamic dress, it should not be viewed in isolation but as part of a comprehensive Islamic social system that regulates the relationship between men and women within society in a manner to safeguard the status of women, strong family units, the rights of children, and healthy cooperation between the genders that is not cheapened by sexual distractions.

Alongside this, as Muslims we must remember that our duty is not simply to secure our rights in the society we live but to take the message of Islam to those around us, for in the Qur'an, Allah (swt) has labelled the believers, "Shuhada An-Naas", "Witnesses to mankind". This requires us to challenge and expose the falsehood of the non-Islamic values and laws in our environment as well as present Islam as the alternative way of life that can effectively and justly organise the affairs of mankind. This is demonstrated in the Seerah of our beloved Prophet (saw) whose actions in Makkah were not aimed simply at securing the right of the Muslims to practice their faith, but to challenge the non-Islamic beliefs, traditions, and laws of the Quraysh such as idol-worship, their fraudulent economic transactions, the burying of daughters, the oppressive actions of the rulers, the treatment of orphans, and the like, alongside calling the people to the noble beliefs, values, and laws of Islam. So our approach in responding to the attack on the niqab or any attack on our deen, must keep these points in mind.

So how should Muslims respond to the attack on the niqab?

Firstly, we must explain that the only reason that Muslim women wear the Islamic dress is as a worship to their Creator. It is not to make a political statement or to isolate themselves from the rest of the society. Furthermore, we must make it clear that although there is difference of opinion amongst Muslims with regards to the wearing of the niqab, it is a valid Islamic opinion based upon specific verses from the Qur'an and hadiths of the Prophet (saw). Therefore, even if we adopt the view that covering the face for a woman is not an obligation or a recommended act in Islam, we CANNOT state that it is not from Islam. Furthermore, we definitely cannot join our voices with those who deride and attack our Muslim sisters who wear it, nor replicate the same false accusations against the dress with our own tongues, which simply provides more ammunition to those who are demonising the niqab to demonise Islam. Moreover, Allah (swt) says,

"The believers are nothing else than brothers. So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy." [Al-Hujjurat:10]

Secondly, this demonization of the niqab is simply a continuation of the age-old Western secular narrative that Islam is oppressive, backward, and uncivilised, while the secular liberal system is modern, progressive, civilised, and liberates women from oppression. We need to therefore turn this debate on its head by explaining that through this constant attack on the Muslim woman's dress, it is the secular system (under which human beings rather than God make the laws) that has exposed its inherent flaws, contradictions, and oppressive, backward nature. It has shown itself to be founded upon an irrational and unpredictable ideology that denies human beings the basic desire to practice their deeply held religious beliefs, and where there is no permanency in rights - that can be discarded based upon the irrational fears and prejudice of the public or those who govern. It has shown that it is incapable of accommodating fully the religious faiths of different communities to create harmony within society and respect for all, and that it is an intellectually weak ideology that coerces individuals to accept its beliefs through force of law, rather than force of argument. Furthermore, it has shown that it is full of contradictions and corrupt ideals - where dressing modestly is vilified and under some secular states criminalised, while sexualisation of the woman, promiscuity, and lewdness are celebrated. And it has shown itself to be an unjust and dangerous system where women can be stigmatised, discriminated against, and excluded from society simply for adopting a religious dress, and where politicians are allowed to engage in the dirty secular politics of inciting hatred and fear towards the culture of minorities to gain a few cheap votes, despite fuelling racism and sowing the seeds of division between communities while all the while shamelessly blaming a six inch piece of cloth for creating barriers and tensions within society.

Alongside exposing the flaws of the man-made secular, liberal system, we should also explain how the ideology and system of Islam, the Khilafah "Caliphate" State carries the correct view and laws to protect the rights of religious minorities to establish harmony and good relations between Muslims and non-Muslims. In Islam, all citizens enjoy the same right to the protection of their life, property, honour, and religion, and it is not permissible for the State to discriminate between the people, rather it must view everyone with the same view regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or colour and treat all with equal fairness and justice. Under the Islamic rule of the Khilafah "Caliphate", non-Muslims are allowed to practice their religious worships without harassment, fear, coercion to change their beliefs, or state intervention or interference in their religious practices. Furthermore any insults, mockery, or demonization of their faith is prohibited. In addition, the rights of all citizens are fixed and not fluid, for legislation is not derived from the fickle, changeable minds of human beings but rather the Islamic texts which prohibit laws to be altered based on the whims of those who govern. Surely all this exemplifies the principles of a truly civilised, just, modern, and progressive system? This fair treatment by the Khilafah "Caliphate" State towards non-Muslims is why historically, the Jews who fled Christian Spain in the 15th century due to persecution in the Spanish inquisition sought refuge within the Khilafah "Caliphate" due to the rights they knew would be afforded to them under Islamic rule. They were permitted to settle in the richest parts of the state, benefitting from its great wealth, including in Istanbul, Sarajevo, Bursa, and Izmir, and hence prospered, leading to many Jews labelling this period under the Khilafah "Caliphate", their Golden Age.

So, we should take the debate away from the niqab and raise a discussion as to the type of system that can effectively secure the rights and good treatment of minorities, create harmony between different faith communities within a society, and organise the affairs of mankind effectively and with justice.

Thirdly, we need to confront the lies, dispel the fears, dismantle the misconceptions and challenge the false accusations and erroneous assumptions that lead to negative views amongst many non-Muslims towards the niqab and the Muslim woman's dress generally. For example, it is not the niqab that makes women invisible within society, as suggested by various feminists, but rather the demonization and bans of the Islamic dress under secular systems that either make Muslim women too scared to leave their homes, excludes them from schools and employment, or even deprives them of the right to move freely within their societies. In addition, it is not women covering their faces which is a threat and cause of community division within Western states, its hysteria and attacks by secular politicians and media that carry racist undertones against the culture of minorities. It is this that marginalizes individuals and creates suspicion between people, sometimes leading to conflict, as seen in the recent riots in France over its niqab ban.

Also, while some secularists promote the lie that Islam orders the woman to cover up because it views her as a temptress and a cause of corruption for society - an allegation that has NO basis in Islamic texts - in reality it is the Western capitalist system that actually markets the woman as a temptress, allowing businesses to exploit her feminine charms and sexualize her body for the sake of profit. Furthermore, how can dressing modestly to preserve one's dignity be labelled backward, while exposing women's bodies for male gratification be viewed as modern and progressive? And how can a simple religious dress be labelled oppressive, while the restrictive, unrealistic templates of beauty relentlessly promoted by the beauty, fashion, and entertainment industries within capitalist liberal states be described as liberating? These are images that fuel eating disorders, pressure women to go under the knife in life-threatening cosmetic procedures to fit the so-called ‘perfect body', and cripple the self-esteem and confidence of young girls who are not able to meet these irrational standards of the ‘body-beautiful'. All this is psychological oppression of women.

And fourthly and importantly, we need to take this debate away from its focus on the Islamic dress and explain as mentioned above that this dress is part of a comprehensive set of rules that form the Islamic social system which regulates the relationship between men and women and achieves certain tangible, positive outcomes for society. This social system also includes the prohibition of the beautification of women in public life, and the prohibition of the objectification and sexualisation of women and society. It also does not permit an unrelated man and woman to be alone together, the free-mixing of unrelated men and women, and intimate relationships outside marriage, with harsh punishments prescribed for fornication or adultery. These laws direct the triggering and fulfilment of the sexual instinct away from public life and to marriage alone. All this protects the unity of the family unit and the rights of children who are born under the contract of marriage, knowing who their parents and hence who are responsible for their provision, care and upbringing. This Islamic social system also enables men and women to cooperate in education and in economic and political life, as well as for other important purposes within society in a manner that is productive and not cheapened or hindered through the sexualisation of this interaction. The Islamic dress code itself facilitates the ideal that women should be judged according to their thinking and skills rather than the scale of their beauty. In addition, the prohibition of the objectification of women and the sexualisation of society prevents the creation of a dangerous environment that degrades women and exacerbates crimes such as violence, rape, or sexual harassment, and hence secures a safe society for them to study, work, and travel. However, all these laws will only materialise comprehensively under the rule of the Islamic Khilafah "Caliphate" system that implements the entire Shariah laws upon the state.

It is therefore not Islam that should be on trial, nor the Muslim woman's dress, but the capitalist secular liberal system that rejects the idea that the relationship between men and women needs regulation, and consequently governs over an epidemic of broken families, child neglect, teenage pregnancies, single mothers, and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as grappling with high levels of rape, sexual harassment, and abuse of girls and women.

In conclusion, as Muslims we must have confidence in our deen. This means refusing to accept any aspect of Islam to be insulted, vilified, or placed on trial without giving a robust response. It means not arguing our points on ideals that contradict our belief such as liberal freedoms, human rights, or the Western concept of gender equality. It means raising for discussing the flaws of the man-made values and systems that dominate the world today and that have led to social chaos and widespread oppression upon women and the rest of humanity. And it means presenting the sublime Islamic values, laws and system of the Khilafah "Caliphate" in a frank, comprehensive, and non-diluted manner, as the alternative to organise the affairs of mankind and secure the status and rights of women in a sound and just way. So rather than allowing others to argue over a six inch piece of cloth, let us as Muslims raise the bar on this debate on the niqab.

"Who is better in speech than the one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness and says I am one of the Muslims." [Fussilat: 33]

US: Florida Parents Protest Textbook Chapter on Islam

A school board meeting was postponed Tuesday after upset Volusia County parents said a world history textbook in schools statewide teaches children more about Islam than other religions. Parents in Volusia County said the book has an entire chapter on Islam but doesn't give the same attention to other religions. They protested outside school district headquarters, calling for equal education. Demonstrators on both sides had a heated discussion. "The people behind this movement are reflecting a national trend of hate groups that are promoting hatred of their Muslim neighbours. I think that's un-American and it's frankly just promoting intolerance, and right now what I think our community needs is to learn from each other," said Hassan Shibly, CAIR Florida executive director. The Volusia County School Board said it postponed its Tuesday meeting "in the interest of public safety." The district said it was contacted by the US. Department of Justice before the meeting was supposed to start and said "the nature of this information raised substantial safety concerns." The district said with the information it received, it decided to put more security measures in place to make sure everyone at the meeting would be safe.[Source: ActionNewsJax.com]

Muslim Workers in America Fired for Praying

For more than three years, Mohamed Maow worked at DHL Global Mail in Hebron, Ky. He said he earned $11.57 an hour to sort mail and was paid time-and-a-half for over-time. Maow, 27, a refugee from Somalia who came to the U.S. in 2007, said he never received any negative comments about his performance. Yet on Oct. 9, after he said DHL supervisors reversed a policy of flexible break times that allowed Maow and fellow Somalis time to pray, he was among two dozen Muslims fired for stopping to say five-minute evening prayers required by their religious beliefs. Maow's is one of 11 complaints filed with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that allege DHL Global Mail fired a group of Somali Muslims for exercising their legally protected religious rights. Fired workers, three of them full-time employees of DHL and the other 21 part-time who help through two temporary service agencies, said they had been allowed to pray by previous supervisors. DHL officials at corporate headquarters in Weston, Fla., and at the Hebron location did not respond to requests from The Cincinnati Enquirer for comment. Reached Wednesday at her Columbus office, in-house DHL counsel Christa Johnson said, "I have no comment at this time." She had responded in writing to CAIR, which would not provide a copy of the letter to The Enquirer. [Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer]

Kerry Makes Highest-Level American Visit to Egypt Since Morsi Ouster

US Secretary of State John Kerry made a brief stop Sunday in Cairo, where he said that America was a friend of the Egyptian people and committed to contributing to Egypt's success. At a press conference, Kerry said that the relationship between the U.S. and Egypt is "very important" and added that whatever happens with the North African country's current political instability is "profoundly important" to the Middle East and the interest of the United States. Kerry's visit was his first since the Egyptian military's removal of Mohammed Morsi in July, which was followed by a harsh crackdown on his protesting supporters that led the US. to suspend hundreds of millions of dollars in aid. The State Department apparently expected a frosty reception for Kerry, especially with tensions running high on the eve of Monday's scheduled start of Morsi's trial on charges of inciting murder. The department refused to confirm Kerry's visit until he landed in Cairo, even though Egypt's official news agency reported the impending trip three days earlier. The secrecy was unprecedented for a secretary of state's travel to Egypt, for decades one of the closest US. allies in the Arab world, and highlighted the deep rifts today between Washington and Cairo. Egypt's foreign minister, Nabil Fahmy, said last month that US.-Egyptian relations were in "turmoil" and warned that the strain could affect the entire Middle East. With U.S. influence ebbing, Kerry's message about the importance of economic and constitutional reforms was expected to be met with suspicion, if not outright hostility, by Egyptian leaders and a population deeply mistrustful of Washington's motives. Many Egyptians accuse the Obama administration of taking sides in their domestic political turmoil; American officials adamantly deny it. [Source: Fox News]

Former Pakistani Ambassador to US Haqqani Reveals America's Secret Letter

US President Barack Obama secretly offered Pakistan in 2009 that he would nudge India towards negotiations on Kashmir in lieu of it ending support to terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Taliban, but much to his disappointment Islamabad rejected the offer. "Since the 1950s Pakistan had wanted an American role in South Asia. Now it was being offered one. In the end Pakistan would have to negotiate the Kashmir issue directly with India. But at least now the American president was saying that he would nudge the Indians toward those negotiations," Pakistan's former ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani writes in his book 'Magnificent Delusions,' which hit the stores on Tuesday. This is Haqqani's interpretation of the secret letter written by President Obama to the then President Asif Ali Zardari, which was personally hand delivered by his then National Security Adviser Gen (rtd) James Jones. The letter's content is for the first time being disclosed by Haqqani, the then Pakistan's envoy to the US. In his 300-page book, Haqqani writes that in November 2009, Jones had travelled to Islamabad to hand deliver a letter written by Obama to Zardari.Dated November 11, 2009, through the letter Obama offered Pakistan to become America's "long-term strategic" partner. The letter "even hinted at addressing Pakistan's oft-stated desire for a settlement of the Kashmir dispute," he writes. "Obama wrote that the United States would tell countries of the region that 'the old ways of doing business are no longer acceptable'. He acknowledged that some countries - a reference to India - had used 'unresolved disputes to leave open bilateral wounds for years or decades. They must find ways to come together'," Haqqani writes. News & Comment America's Liberal Democracy is a Charade and In Truth America is a Totalitarian State

  • Published in News & Comment

News:

On November 5th 2013, American officials offered some concessions over its spying tactics abroad. This includes some changes to how the US government conducts its phone and Internet surveillance programmes as long as they do not undermine the programmes' effectiveness, U.S. officials told a privacy oversight board.

Comment:

"It's almost incomprehensible and more than tragic that this kind of adversarial relationship exists between the government and the people; where fear and distrust prevail and government policies and actions are tearing down the Constitutional foundations of this nation. And if this descent into the deepening darkness of totalitarianism is not somehow aborted, then America will become a living hell."-Michael Payne

With each passing day new revelations about the extent of US spying operations both at home and abroad are making headlines across the world. At home the National Security Agency (NSA) has been spying on millions of Americans by sweeping up metadata, and tapping data centres of leading American companies such as Google. Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google attacked NSA practices and said, " It's really outrageous that the National Security Agency was looking between the Google data centres, ...The steps that the organization was willing to do without good judgment to pursue its mission and potentially violate people's privacy, it's not OK."

However, Schmidt's remarks do not absolve American companies from the brewing spy scandal. On the contrary, the existence of the notorious PRISM programme, which collects internet communication in collaboration with leading US tech companies such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, belittles Schmidt's remarks. Additionally, PRISM is the number one source of raw intelligence used for NSA's analytic reports, and it accounts for 91% of the NSA's Internet traffic acquired under Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) section 702. This squarely places American tech companies at the forefront of the digital spying efforts.

The scale and magnitude of the spying operation led by NSA on foreign shores is simply mind boggling. For instance it is claimed that between December 10, 2012 and January 8, 2013 NSA spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France. In Spain, NSA secretly tracked 60 million phone calls in Spain in a single month. The agency has also spied on at least 35 foreign leaders and the most high profile victim is Angela Merkel whose phone was tapped for at least 10 years. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff cancelled a visit to the US in protest, and a statement on behalf of Merkel said, "Among close friends and partners... there should be no such monitoring of the communications of a head of government." The statement also said that Mrs Merkel had told Mr Obama: "Such practices must be prevented immediately."

Leaving aside America's enemies, American citizens and America's allies abroad must be wondering what crimes they have committed to warrant such extensive intrusion into their privacy. The Obama government has sought to play down the outpouring of rage over NSA tactics by offering feeble justifications ranging from the prevention of terrorism to every country spies and America is no different. For instance, NSA's Director, General Keith Alexander, claimed the NSA surveillance had contributed to the prevention of 54 terror plots. But after media furore of over the claims, NSA's deputy Director admitted that only one terror plot was foiled due surveillance.

The fallout from America's spy programme has been immediate and far reaching. American technology giants such as Microsoft, Google, Verizon, AT&T are facing credibility issues after being caught red handed in aiding and abetting NSA, and the EU is reconsidering its intelligence cooperation with the US. Meanwhile Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC countries) are accelerating plans to complete the building of a new internet.

So clearly then the crisis for America is not limited to overturning its trust-deficit with allies and other countries. Rather, America the harbinger of freedom and democracy faces a much graver threat i.e. its behaviour is incompatible with the values it espouses. Already, some notable American personalities are raising their voices. For example, when Jimmy Carter was asked about Edward Snowden's exposure of Washington's secret global surveillance system, he said, "America does not have a functioning democracy at this point in time."

Islam has specified clear rules about the Islamic state spying on its citizens.

Allah (swt) mentions in the Quran: "And do not spy on one another." [TMQ Surah Al-Hujurat: 49:12].

In relation to this verse, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf reported: He would patrol the city at night with Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, and on one occasion they were walking when the lamp of a household caught their attention. They approached it until they heard loud voices inside the door. Umar grabbed the hand of Abdur Rahman and he said, "Do you know whose house this is?" He said, "No." Umar said, "This is the house of Rabia ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf and they are inside drinking wine right now! So what do you think?" Abdur Rahman said, "Indeed, I think we have done what Allah has prohibited for us. Allah the Exalted said: ((وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا)) ‘Do not spy', [49:12] and we have spied on them." So Umar turned away and he left them alone.

The return of the Islamic Caliphate will set a new benchmark in governance and how people will live in peace and security. They will have no fear of being spied upon by the authorities or being subjected to the extensive surveillance as witnessed by the West.

What did the Republic, which is celebrated since 90 years, offer for it to be declared as a Festival except instability of Muslims and increase in crime levels and a life of humiliation? (Translated)

For the past 90 years, the Turkish Republic has regarded its citizens as its enemy; since its inception October 29th of 1923 on the basis of the secular democratic idea; built on the remains of the Ottoman Islamic Khilafah "Caliphate" State which was destroyed by the local agents, admirers of the malicious English and the West; which was regarded at the time even by the recognised powers of the time as the "Sick Man".

Due to this hostile view towards Islam and the Muslims held by this corrupt regime: The Islamic laws in ruling were replaced with Western laws, there was an intrusion on the Islamic way of life through the rejection of Allah's commands and prohibitions, the mosques were shut down and converted to stables, the Athan (call to prayer) was changed into the Turkish language faraway from its origin, major sins like Zina (extra marital relations) and Riba (interest) and alcohol usage have became legal according to the laws of the State, and thousands of Muslims were killed and assaulted for refusing to keeping silent over this oppression.

The Republic regime in contradiction to Islam is based on secularism that denies the right of Allah of control and management of the earth. It regards the laws revealed and explained by Him (swt) to the people as rules that do not agree with the times. By the idea of democracy, man is made sovereign not Allah (swt).

At the time when the circle of "Nationals" were forcing the Muslims to adopt the Republic like soldiers do and by the strict laws, the conservative democrats began their work to fool the Muslims by explaining the word "Al-Jumhoor" (the public) as an Arabic word which means "the majority" in an attempt to make the Muslims adopt it through changing the interpretations of the Shar'i texts.

For this reason they still continue to celebrate the ominous day of the establishment of the Republic as a festival with full knowledge of the hadeeth of the Prophet (saw) which explicitly says:

«أبدلكم الله تعالى بهما خيرا منهما، يوم الفطر والأضحى».

"Allah Ta'ala has replaced them for you with better than them, the day of Fitr and Adha" [Narrated by Abu Daoud].

In terms of the reality, while they celebrate this festival, this regime does not have any recorded successes: whether in the political front, economic, security, education, society or moral level. The Turkish state failed in every stage to secure political stability, including the ruling AK party. On the political front, the country became a follower to the outside foreign policy of the major powers. On the economic front, the country's foreign debts did not decrease from their known levels of billions of dollars, which pulled people into the interest based loans swamp, and it failed to deliver the state of luxury to the poor class of society contrary to their claims.

As for the crime levels, it is increasing day by day, nonstop. Even the numbers displayed by the Security Department and the Statistics Institute showed that crime have reached terrifying levels.

As for the Education System, it remains deficient, only good for futility and games. It has led to dissolution of the youth. Youth under this Education System have become a generation that deals with drugs, alcohol and immorality; and the capitalist mind-set dominate them.

The family unit which is the basic nucleus of society is in a pitiful state. Family ties which Allah (swt) ordered to be connected (as is well known by all) is cut. According to the information presented by the Family Ministry that 150,000 divorce cases happen every year.

These numbers are not unexpected. Allah (swt) is the Creator and the Planner, more knowledgeable of the Universe, Man, and life and He (swt) puts down the excellent system for their organisation. As there is no doubt that Islam is a complete and comprehensive system of life that takes care of the affairs and presents all solutions to its problems, it is not incomplete. Do the rulers of today and their followers think that Islam is incomplete? God Forbid, because it is witnessed that they import kufr systems to implement over the people to suppress the Muslims. According to which creed can they prove that what they hold is "the best"? Allah (swt) says:

"This day I have perfected for you your deen and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as a deen." [Al Ma'ida: 3]

The Prophet's Seerah has clearly proved beyond doubt that the Khilafah "Caliphate" System is the only system that implements the Systems of Islam which is for people's lives; it implements it in a complete and comprehensive way. The Islamic History for over 1400 century is the best testimony to this.

Look to what became of us when we forgot the Khilafah "Caliphate" so fast and yet it has not been a century since its destruction. Did you see how our minds were fooled with? We have become in a state of ignorance about our ideology and our great systems to the extent that we became pawns under the kufr systems, its thoughts and way of life. How can we be satisfied with this situation? When Allah (swt) says:

((وَاللّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُواْ مُؤْمِنِينَ))

"Allah and His Messenger are more worthy for them to satisfy, if they should be believers." [At-Tawba: 62]

News:

In a televised address on Friday, October 18, 2013, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina offered formation of an all-party government to supervise the upcoming national election. Two days later, opposition leader Khaleda Zia made alternative proposal for forming an election-time, ‘non-party' government. On October 28, Hasina talked with Khaleda over phone when Khaleda gave a two day ultimatum to start a dialogue. The 37-minute telephone conversation was later leaked to media, apparently by the government, creating another controversy in the national politics. The 10th Parliamentary election is supposed to be held in January 2014.

Meanwhile, the activities of the foreign diplomats surrounding the election are lead news in the mainstream media of Bangladesh daily. Especially, Dan W. Mozena, the U.S. ambassador to Bangladesh, is continuously meeting with the top political leaders, diplomats of other countries and senior government officials. His meeting with Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka and a visit to New Delhi to discuss election of Bangladesh has grabbed high attention in the political arena.

Comment:

Scrapping the provision for an election-time caretaker government by Hasina in the 15th amendment to the constitution is a good example of how the whims and desires of human beings is the supreme law in the man-made system. The Constitution Reform Committee had recommended retention of the caretaker government system with minor modifications after extensive consultation with various stakeholders including the political parties. Their recommendations were turned upside down by Sheikh Hasina, who decided to scrap the system.

The Awami League leaders who, in 1996, launched violent political programs for the caretaker government system are now shamelessly opposing it. Even those who were in the Constitution Reform Committee and who argued and recommended retention of the caretaker government system are now shamelessly arguing against it following the desires of Hasina. On the other hand, BNP, who were in the helm of the country during 1991-96 and were forced to accept the system are now launching series of violent political programs to attain a neutral, non-party election-time government. This is the reality of the man-made system as ironically, the positions of the parties have changed over time regarding the same issue.

While two political parties have divided the nation and locked their horns for a violent battle, the foreign diplomats, the vultures, have started to sharpen their bloody claws. How do our shameless politicians meet and update them on the political developments openly and on a regular basis? How does the ambassador of the terrorist America, who moves around Dhaka city with a security protocol equivalent to the Prime Minister and President of the country, dictate politics of the country? Do all these serve the interests of the people who struggle for their daily living? In fact, hundreds of people have died and maimed in the last eight months due to political violence and government atrocities. This is the result of man-made system where political parties fulfil their desires as they wish claiming that they are doing everything for the benefit of the people, even if that means killing people in broad daylight. Allah (swt) says,

"So rule between them by what Allah has revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging away from the truth that has come to you." [Surah Al-Ma'idah: 48]

While man-made system fails to solve people's problems, system given Allah (swt), the Creator of the whole universe and humans, has comprehensive solutions to all human problems. Allah (swt) says,

"We have revealed to you the Book which clarifies every matter." [Surah an-Nahl: 64]

Islam has laid out a specific mechanism for the election of the Khaleefah by the Ummah in the Islamic state. We must turn to Islam because only the system given by Allah (swt) ensures the real solution which is obligatory on us.
