Fuel Price Hike States a Cruel Government to People

  • Published in News & Comment
  •   |

Event:

President Yudhoyono met with House of Representatives leaders at his office in Jakarta on Monday, to discuss the government's planned increase in subsidized fuel prices and related compensation programs. "This meeting is not aimed at reaching an agreement. There will be a formal mechanism for that in accordance with the law. Through this meeting, together we will focus on the actual issues in the economic sector so we can discuss what the government and the House can do to address them," Yudhoyono said upon opening the meeting which then continued behind closed doors.

After the meeting, Priyo told journalists that Yudhoyono had presented the reasons behind the government's plan to raise the prices of subsidized fuels. "The state budget allocated to subsidize fuels is ballooning and is threatening the health of our economy," the seasoned lawmaker told journalists. Priyo said that the government had attempted to convince the House's leadership about the importance of four compensation programs for the poor, who would be severely impacted by the fuel price hike, like temporary direct cash assistance (BLSM) which many believe would be modeled on 2009's controversial direct cash assistance (BLT). Politicians, from both the government coalition and the opposition, have voiced rejection of the BLSM program, saying it is not a sustainable solution and would be prone to politicization ahead of the 2014 elections; suggested that the government should transfer most of the funds released by the reduced fuel subsidy to the construction of infrastructure and basic facilities such as in education and health. (Jakarta Post, 13th of May)

Comment:

The fuel price hike will absolutely impact people's life.  There will be more number of poor people in Indonesia. But the government has programmed it as suggested by IMF (International Monetary Fund) shows that the Indonesia government has no authority to have its own decision even it involved majority's condition. Moreover this year it will be realized at the same time as the school entrance for children, and also closely to Ramadan fasting. Everybody knows that the two moments need extra-expenses for each family. So, this price hike will severely affect each family! It is a cruel decision!

On the other hand, people can see that in some cases involved the corporate owner, the government is too ‘generous' to give subsidy for them. It's not fair!  This is actually the nature of capitalist government. It stands in the side of corporation and conglomerates in various ways in order to avoid business bankruptcy instead of giving the rights of people to have its own resources as oil. The government always tries to reduce or even withdraw the subsidy for many people, one of them by raising fuel prices. People can not afford living under this cruel system anymore. It's time to change the regime and change the system so that people living in a prosperous and blessed shade and the Islamic caliphate.

Details:

More British Converting To Islam:

Using census data on race and religion, and questionnaires issued to mosques, Kevin Brice, a researcher at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, reckons around 5,200 Britons turn to Islam every year, bringing the total number of converts to about 100,000, the Economist reported. According to the report, those who embrace Islam tend to do so after years of contact with Muslims. Some, mostly women (who make up around two-thirds of new believers), want to marry a Muslim. Others are fed up with the bawdiness of British society. Many speak of seeking a sense of community. Batool al-Toma, an Irish-Catholic convert who runs the New Muslim Project in Leeds, was attracted, she says, by the spirituality of Islam and the warmth of relationships she saw among Muslims. For men, prisons have proven a fertile ground for conversions. Just over 11,000 prisoners are Muslims, about 13% of the total. A study by the prisons inspectorate in 2010 says converts, a third of those interviewed, said the discipline and structure of Islam helped them to cope with prison life. Others cited the support they received from their Muslim "brothers". Some were initially attracted by the prospect of a cushier spell in jail-more time outside their cells, for example, and better food at Ramadan, but then completed their conversion.

Hezbollah And Iran Propping Up Syria:

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has warned that Iran and its militant Shi'ite Lebanese ally Hezbollah are "propping up" Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Speaking in Jordan, the Foreign Secretary said: "It is very clear that Syrian regime is receiving a great deal of support ... from outside Syria from Hezbollah and Iran." This is a regime that is increasingly dependent on external support," he told a news conference given with his Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh. Ahead of a meeting of the Friends of Syria alliance, he said: "The regime is being propped up by others outside, further undermining its legitimacy.  "It also shows that it is a crisis that is increasing the threat to regional stability." Mr Hague said Britain would urge international powers to set a date in the next few days for a conference to try to end the two-year conflict engulfing Syria.  "It is important that it takes place as quickly as possible because people are dying and more and more people are driven from their homes.  "The risk to regional stability grow every day so this something that cannot be debated endlessly," he added. His comments echo those of a European Union diplomatic source who said: "Since November the regime has been able to go on the offensive not because it is stronger, but because those backing it - Iran, Russia, Hezbollah - are directly helping it either through weapons, planning of operations or financial assistance."

The US Turned India into a Dangerous Nuclear Power:

In January, Delhi revealed a new, 800km-ranged submarine launched missile (SLBM) designated K-15. Twelve of these strategic, nuclear-armed missiles will be carried by India's first of a class of domestically built nuclear-powered submarine, "Arihant." India is also working on another SLBM, K-5, with a range of some 2,800km.  These new nuclear subs and their SLBM's will give India the capability to strike many high-value targets around the globe. Equally important, they complete India's nuclear triad of nuclear weapons delivered by aircraft, missiles, and now sea that will be invulnerable to a decapitating first strike from either Pakistan or China. Last February, it was revealed that India is fast developing a new, long-ranged, three-stage ballistic missile, Agni-VI. This powerful missile is said to be able to carry up to ten independently targetable nuclear warheads, known as MIRV's.  Agni-VI's range is believed to be at least 10,000km, putting all of China, Japan, Australia, and Russia in its range. A new 15,000km missile capable of hitting North America is also in the works under cover of India's civilian space program. India is also developing accurate cruise missiles and miniaturized nuclear warheads to fit into their small diameter. These important strategic developments will put India ahead of other nuclear powers France, Britain, North Korea, and Pakistan, about equal in striking power to Israel and China, and not too far behind the United States and Russia. Delhi says it needs a nuclear triad because of the growing threat of China, whose conventional and nuclear forces are being rapidly modernized.  The Bush administration began quietly aiding India's nuclear program with nuclear fuel when India had a shortage of fissile material. Some advanced technology from the US and India's second largest arms supplier, Israel, has also aided Delhi's nuclear and missile delivery programs.

US Claims Chinese Military is On New Cyber Offensive Against America:

Officials within the United States government say hackers from China have renewed their assault on US targets only three months after a highly-touted investigation linked the People's Liberation Army to a series of cyber attacks waged at American entities. According to the New York Times, computer security experts and US officials alike say the PLA's sophisticated cyber squadron is attempting to hack American businesses after a brief hiatus. Earlier this year, the Times cited a report by Northern Virginia security firm Mandiant when they alleged that Chinese hackers targeted businesses and government agencies inside the US, as well as a Canadian utility company and others. Mandiant said in the February report that the PLA "Unit 61398" group compromised 141 companies across 20 major industries during the last few years, infecting the computers at Coca-Cola, the Canadian arm of Telvent and others. Earlier this month, the US Department of Defence threw its weight behind Mandiant's claims, and for the first time ever the administration of President Barack Obama accused China of cybercrimes. "In 2012, numerous computer systems around the world, including those owned by the US government, continued to be targeted for intrusions, some of which appear to be attributable directly to the Chinese government and military," the Pentagon wrote. Now, the chief executive at Mandiant and a number of US officials admit that China relaxed its campaign after the February report was published - only to have already returned to its hacking ways weeks later. "They dialled it back for a little while, though other groups that also wear uniforms didn't even bother to do that," CEO Kevin Mandia told the Times on Friday. "I think you have to view this as the new normal." Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Geng Shuang, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, accused the US of "using cybersecurity as an excuse to take inappropriate actions against Chinese companies and individuals" without providing "proof and evidence." "China stands ready to carry out constructive cooperation with all countries, including the US, to safeguard peace and security of the cyberspace on the basis of mutual respect," he said.

Afghan Law on Elimination of Violence against Women is Aimed at Importing More Western Liberal Values into Afghanistan through the Back Door

  • Published in News & Comment
  •   |

Event:

On the 18th of May, the BBC, CBC, the UK Guardian and many news outlets worldwide reported that the debate in the Afghan Parliament regarding the Law on Elimination of Violence Against Women (LEVAW) was halted by some Afghan lawmakers who argued that some parts of it violate Islamic principles. The law took effect in 2009 by a decree by President Hamid Karzai but was not ratified by Parliament. The measure has now been brought before Parliament by female Afghan MP and women's rights activist Fawzia Koofi who wants it approved by a parliamentary vote to prevent its reversal by any future president. Amongst its provisions, the law criminalizes forced and child marriage, domestic violence, and "baad" - the traditional practice of selling and buying women to settle disputes. Various women's rights activists and other Western and secular voices have described the block in the passing of the law as a blow to the protection and progress of women's rights in the country.

Comment:

Laws such as the Elimination of Violence Against Women, or international women's treaties such as CEDAW are wolves in sheep's clothing that seek to further import Western secular and liberal values into Afghanistan or other Muslim countries by deceptively wrapping these corrupt ideals with the appealing banner of ‘women's rights' or preventing violence or mistreatment of women that no decent-minded individual - Muslim or otherwise would reject. By mixing measures such as the criminalization of forced marriage, domestic violence, and ‘baad' - actions which Islam abhors and rejects, with measures that contradict Islamic social laws such as criminalizing Islam's recommendation of early marriage, under the sensationalist label of preventing ‘child marriage', advocates of the Western inspired LEVAW and CEDAW seek to conceal their intent of outlawing Islam and placing the secular liberal belief as the basis by which women's rights are defined. The aim ultimately is, as in the West, to give women and men the ‘freedom' to dress how they want and pursue any lifestyle or intimate relationship they desire, regardless of the chaos it sows upon the family unit and society. Furthermore, Western secular commentators and media manipulate the rejection of such laws to falsely accuse Islam of accepting and even endorsing oppressive non-Islamic practices such as forced marriage, violence against women, or stripping them of education or an active public life.  This is to re-enforce the time-old Western orientalist discourse and false narrative that the Shariah oppresses women which was engineered and continues to be promoted to distance Muslim women from their belief and from supporting Islamic governance in their lands - all to help maintain systems and regimes in the Muslim world that continue to cater to the interests of Western powers rather than that of Islam and the people of the region.

Such secular orientated laws and Western discourse on women's rights present Muslim women with a false choice - to either embrace the secular liberal way of life, values and system if they want to be free from violence as well as have access to educational, economic, legal, and political rights, OR to succumb to (in their words) ‘an extremist version of Islam' that will subject them to violence, seclude them from society, and deprive them of all rights. Both these 2 options are false. Firstly, women within Western secular states may enjoy access to education, healthcare, employment, and a political voice but they are also grappling with huge levels of discrimination in public life as well as an epidemic of violence. In the US, 3 women are murdered every day at the hands of their husband or partner, and nearly 20% of women have suffered rape or attempted rape. In Europe, 1 in 4 women face domestic violence, while in England and Wales, 1 in 5 women have been victims of a sexual offence. And secondly, it is a well-known fact that it was Islam that pioneered educational, economic, political, and legal rights for women 1400 years ago as well as outlawing any form of exploitation or violence against them; rights that were secured through the Divine system of Shariah laws implemented under the Khilafah "Caliphate" state that acted as a guardian and protector for its women for over 13 centuries. The lack of access to rights that women in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the rest of the Muslim world face today is not due to Islam but due to man-made Western-imposed systems and rulers in our lands that replaced the Khilafah "Caliphate" and under which women have to struggle for justice, or engage in lengthy, expensive judicial procedures to secure their rights that often end with failure due to incompetency or corruption. Therefore it is not possible for women to get their rights unless the laws given by Allah (swt) are completely and comprehensively implemented under the system of Khilafah "Caliphate".

Hence, advocates of these secular, liberal orientated laws need to sincerely question what the man-made secular, liberal system has brought to women in the West and East, and by doing so they will come to realize that embracing these values is not the path to protecting women from violence or violation of rights. However, those Afghan law-makers who blocked LEVAW on the basis that elements of it contradict Islam also need to acknowledge that it is the very Western-based parliamentary system where they legislate the laws rather than Allah (swt) which is one of the greatest violations against Islam for it gives human beings sovereignty rather than the Creator of the Universe. It is this very democratic system that gives MP's the opportunity to debate the imposition of laws that contradict the Shariah. So, if they are sincere to Islam, then it is the democratic, parliamentary system that they need to reject along with every law that contradicts the Shariah, embracing in its place the Khilafah "Caliphate" that alone will implement all the laws of Allah (swt) and ensure that the women of Afghanistan and the entire Muslim world are protected from violence and get their rights completely secured under the just system of Islam. Allah (swt) says,

"O mankind! Be careful of (your duty to) your Lord, Who created you from a single being and from him He created his wife of the same (kind) and spread from these two, many men and women; and fear Allah through Whom you demand (your mutual rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you." [TMQ An-Nisa: 1]
