Press Release
Hizb ut Tahrir Holds an International Women's Conference after Two Days in Jakarta

On Saturday 22nd December 2012, The Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir in coordination with Hizb ut Tahrir Indonesia, will gather 1500 influential women from across the world for a momentous International Women's Conference titled: "The Khilafah "Caliphate": Protecting Women from Poverty and Enslavement". This important event will address the causes and solutions to the desperate poverty, widespread exploitation, and general economic oppression affecting millions of women across the Muslim world and globally. The conference will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia and will be attended by an audience of female political activists, journalists, academics, teachers, professors, university students, lawyers, community leaders, and representatives of organizations. Speakers from various regions of the world, including Africa, Asia, Turkey, the Arab world, and the West will be discussing the detrimental impact of the capitalist system and its free-market economy upon the lives of women and their families, as well as highlighting the failure of the current leaderships of the Muslim world to provide financial security for their women and protect them from enslavement. The event will also present a detailed discussion of the Khilafah "Caliphate" system that is based purely upon an Islamic constitution, and explain how its unique policies and laws provide a credible and time-tested approach to protecting women from poverty and exploitation as well as establishing for them financial security.

Dr. Nazreen Nawaz, Women's Representative of The Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir commented, "For too long Western capitalist states have been selling an illusion to the world, that the capitalist system and free-market economy are the best way to establish economic stability and prosperity for women. In reality, this corrosive ideology that embraces the interest based, debt-fuelled model of growth built on greed and credit has created volatile economies, mass unemployment as well as a one-track flow of wealth from the poor to the rich. This has generated mass inequality in wealth and the desperate levels of poverty afflicting millions of women across the world, causing many to seek employment as migrant workers, in factories, farms, or businesses, often working under slave-like conditions for financial survival. IMF and World Bank loans and free-market policies such as privatization of assets and trade liberalization have been poisoned pills that have pushed the Muslim world that is first world in terms of resources into third world status - all to raise the revenue of Western capitalist states and corporations. The American capitalist dream has turned out to be humanity's nightmare. It has taken the world and its women on an economic rollercoaster to ruin."

"In addition, the capitalist belief that places the securing of personal benefit and economic gain as the primary goal of life has nurtured materialistic, consumerism-dominated societies where securing profit prevails over securing the dignity and wellbeing of women. This has resulted in widespread exploitation and enslavement. Furthermore, for the sake of raising government and corporate revenue, capitalist states have pressured women to enter employment under the guise of ‘women's empowerment', equating her worth to her level of wealth creation, burdening her with being both the breadwinner and home-maker of the family, waging a war on motherhood, and robbing women of their time with their children - causing them to compromise their vital duty as nurturers and educators of the future generation. Capitalism has therefore placed a price tag on women, made them slaves to the economy, and treated them like objects to generate wealth."

"There needs to be an end to all of this. It is now time for a new political and economic vision for the women of the Muslim world. There needs to be the birth of a system that places securing human need over financial gain; a system that places eradicating poverty through the fair distribution of wealth at the heart of its economy; a system that embodies sound economic policies which couple prosperity with economic justice, and that does not build its richness from the ruin of people; a state to which women globally can truly look to as a model by which to protect them from poverty and enslavement, and that views them as dignified human beings and not objects of wealth creation. It is the Khilafah "Caliphate" system that embodies this vision. It is a state that greatly values motherhood, and obliges that women be provided for always by their male relatives or the state while simultaneously viewing the preservation of their economic rights as sacred, including their right to work in a safe environment, free from exploitation or abuse."

"We call all women who wish to see an end to the economic oppression affecting women globally and who are searching for a true solution to poverty and enslavement to join us at this important conference."

"Which then is best? - He who laid the foundation of his building on piety to Allah and His good Pleasure? Or he who laid the foundation of his building on the edge of a bank ready to crumble to pieces." [TMQ At-Tauba: 109]
