A delegation from Hizb ut Tahrir in the Wilayah of Tunisia, consisting of Ustaadh Abd al-Raouf al-Amiri, Head of the Political Bureau, and Ust. Yassin bin Yahya, Head of the Central Communications Committee, paid two visits to the headquarters of the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights and the headquarters of the Journalists’ Syndicate on Monday, 26 October 2026.
The delegation met with the communications officers at the League’s office and at the Journalists’ Syndicate, and explained the purpose of the visit, which concerned the arrest of Ust. Muhammad al-Nasir Shuweikhah, member of the Party’s Media Office in the Wilayah of Tunisia, for more than twenty months. The arrest was initiated by the military judiciary on the grounds of a press article he wrote for Al-Tahrir Newspaper, proclaiming the truth in support of our people in Gaza.
The delegation also informed them that the trial of Ust. Muhammad Shuweikhah would take place on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at the Military Court of First Instance in Tunis. It reminded them that the military judiciary is not competent to prosecute civilians if there are no military personnel among them, and that Decree No. 87, which regulates political parties, assigned the authority to hold political parties accountable exclusively and solely to the Prime Minister. This is in addition to Decree No. 115, which protects the authors of press articles published in periodicals from such cases.
The delegation called upon the League and the Syndicate to assume their responsibility, given the role upon which they were founded: defending human rights and journalists’ rights without applying multiple and differing standards. It reminded them that they had previously been informed in 2023 of numerous violations to which Hizb ut Tahrir and its members had been subjected, yet they did not lift a finger!
On the same day, a second delegation, consisting of Attorney Mr. Fathi al-Khumayri, a member of the Central Communications Committee, and Attorney Mr. Akram Ghiloufi, also visited the Bar Association at the Court of First Instance in Tunis, where the delegation submitted a statement to the Association’s secretariat regarding the case of Muhammad al-Nasir Shuweikhah.
At the conclusion of the three meetings, Ust. Abd al-Raouf al-Amiri made a statement in front of the League’s headquarters, Ust. Yassin bin Yahya made a statement in front of the Journalists’ Syndicate’s headquarters, and Mr. Fathi al-Khumayri made a statement in front of the Bar Association. They explained the purpose of the three visits. The two delegations also left correspondence for each of the following: the President of the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights, the President of the Tunisian Journalists’ Syndicate, and the President of the Tunis branch of the National Bar Association. The correspondence included the Party’s statements on the matter and a request for an urgent meeting concerning it.
