Finland and Sweden submitted an official request to join NATO on 18/5/2022, at the Alliance headquarters in Brussels, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but this announcement was soon followed by a Turkish objection, because of the two countries’ stance on Turkey’s fight against Kurdish armed groups, led by the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which is active in Turkey and the region.
