Narendra Modi “A True Friend”?

The three-day official visit of Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to India concluded on August 21, 2024. He assured Malaysians of potential investments worth billions of ringgits from India. This visit saw the signing of eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the Malaysian and Indian governments, along with seven Business-to-Business (B2B) MoUs. After the visit, Anwar expressed gratitude to the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, describing the visit as "very satisfying" and thanking Modi for the invitation.

Prime Minister Anwar's visit to India reflects the current trend in international diplomacy, where economic interests often overshadow other considerations, including that of Islam. Despite Narendra Modi's well-documented anti-Islamic stance and the harsh treatment of Muslims under his leadership, Anwar chose to highlight the economic potential of the trip, even referring to Modi as a "true friend."

It is important to remember who Narendra Modi is and what he represents. Since coming to power, Modi and his Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have systematically marginalized India's 200 million Muslims. His government has implemented policies that favor Hindus while actively oppressing Muslims, even interfering with religious practices. Modi's administration has incited violence against Muslims, including the infamous 2002 Gujarat riots, where thousands of Muslims were brutally murdered, raped, and displaced. Modi's agenda includes a push to reconvert Muslims and Christians to Hinduism, arguing that their ancestors were Hindus. His divisive rhetoric has fueled a dangerous environment for Muslims in India, where even basic religious practices can lead to persecution.

The troubling aspect of Anwar's visit is his willingness to overlook these atrocities for the sake of economic gain. While Malaysia seeks to benefit from investments and stronger ties with India, it must not ignore the implications of aligning with a leader like Modi. The support Modi has provided to the illegal Jewish entity, which is currently pursuing the genocide of Muslims in Palestine, further highlights the depth of his hostility towards Islam. In a world where economic interests often dictate international relations, it is crucial for Muslim leaders to always take into consideration issues that play into the sensitivity of the Ummah and act within the boundary of Islam. The alliance with Modi raises questions about where Malaysia stands on issues concerning the state our Muslim brothers and sisters. Clearly he is not a true friend but a true enemy!

In the current geopolitical climate, no Muslim nation is likely to act in accordance with Islam in totality and recognize Modi as a clear adversary. It is only through the establishment of the true Khilafah (Caliphate) - one that genuinely upholds Islam on a global scale—that we can hope to effectively address the injustices faced by Muslims in India, Palestine, and across the world, while promoting the justice and goodwill of Islam globally.
