 Nafsiya Reflections: Being Reformed

Man has been the most favored creature; even over the angels. Man is distinguished by his Intellect and makes him superior over all creatures. If we as an Ummah use this intellect in order to reform ourselves would this allow seen changes in society?

Society is composed of individuals, thoughts, emotions, and a system that is applied to them. If one starts to reform themselves and moves on to his/her reformation onto their family, friends, peers, neighbors, etc. it may start to contribute to the building of a general positive environment. Individualistic actions like performing Salah, Fasting, reading Quran, giving in charity, enjoining the good and forbidding the evil is to reform oneself within. If we look back on the Seerah we see that Islam was a commitment to the commands of Islam was based upon the acceptance of Imaan in general. Examples were, Not to worship anyone besides Allah (swt), not steal, not commit Zina, prohibition of burying the daughters alive.

One of the greatest examples of being a reformer and helped to reform society was the Sahaba Umar bin Al Khattab (RA). He, at first firmly opposed Islam to the extent of wanting to kill Prophet Muhammad (saw) and was adamantly prominent in persecuting Muslims. SubhanAllah, that all changed when he heard the verses from Surah Taha being recited and converted to Islam. He then became an individual who reformed himself then to society. He earned the title, “Al-Farooq” and was known for his justice. He became the second Caliphate. Umar (R.A.) was the first to introduce the public ministry system, where the records of officials and soldiers were kept. He was also the first person ever to appoint police forces to keep civil order. Another important aspect of Umar's (R.A.) rule was that he banned any of his governors/officials from engaging in trade or any sort of business dealings whilst being in a position of power.

Umar bin Al-Khattab is only a small example of being one of the reformers. Today, society has been reformed into a secular society where one can go and chase his/her desires, whims, and live how society likes for that individual to live or even accept secular Kuffar ideas in order to be accepted. This has caused people drowning in the lowest depths of decadence and irresponsibility. Man, as a leader, has failed to utilize his mind in seeking the correct path to his Creator.

The first way to reform ourselves is to seek compulsory learning of the Islamic Shari’ah. We seek to gain Allah swt’s pleasure. Allah swt says,

(إِنَّمَا يَخۡشَى ٱللَّهَ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِ ٱلۡعُلَمَـٰٓؤُاْۗ) “Indeed, those who fear Allah from His servants are those who have knowledge.” [Fatir: 35:28]. In addition, Abu Harairah narrated that Rasulullah (saw) said,

«مَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ» “When Allah wills good for a person, He causes him to understand the religion.” [Sunan Ibn Majah].

Once we learn the systems of Islam we see how corrupt society has become and how much the future generations identity is at stake of losing their identity. We start to realize we need to reform society and doing this is joining a group. A group that is focused on bringing about REAL and RADICAL REVOLUTION. Together with them diligent work towards a common goal of alleviating the living status of humanity across the world. The living status of humanity will improve on condition that the party will strive to resume the Islamic way of life based on the Islamic Shari’ah. Therefore, the main goal of the said party must be to reestablish the Islamic System of Governance, the Khilafah (Caliphate) on the method of Prophethood. This party or group is NONE OTHER than Hizb ut Tahrir, (the Party of Liberation). The party is working day and night to unshackle man from the enslavement to his whims and return him to the servitude of his Creator – Allah (swt). Hizb ut Tahrir yearns for healthy, intellectual upright and focused men amongst the peak performers to respond to its call for the reestablishment of the Khilafah.

This will give us a purpose in Life and to keep striving ourselves to reform into the future Sahabas or Sahabayat. Of course, working for this type of reformation is not a walk in the park, but one does not know the ranks it will give these individuals in the Hereafter. Individual reform among the Muslims of the Ummah in general has a positive effect on the Ummah accelerating its revival. Individual reform in its highest standards is also obligatory among the individuals of the Kutlah (cluster) that works to revive the Ummah. It is no wonder that many of the historical personalities that succeeded in defeating the enemies of Islam were people with a high degree of character. Groups that don’t focus on countering the beliefs promoted by Secular Liberalism create a vacuum among their individual members that would either be filled with the thoughts and emotions emanating from the status quo or it could be filled with the pure and sincere Islamic thoughts and emotions. Individual reform is not complete without having the correct beliefs in relation to the dominant status quo and its contradictions with Islam.

“Prepare against them what you ˹believers˺ can of ˹military˺ power and cavalry to deter Allah’s enemies and your enemies as well as other enemies unknown to you but known to Allah. Whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be paid to you in full and you will not be wronged.” [8:60]
