The Oldest Brother to be Released from Guantanamo

The news agency NPR reported that the oldest prisoner in Guantanamo Bay was released at the age of 75 bringing the population down to 35. Saifullah Paracha was sent home to his native Pakistan in the last week of October 2022. The release was approved based on the fact that there was zero evidence for his detention and that there could be no further justification for keeping him incarcerated.

On the 21st of October 2022 the BBC reported on the story of Anti-vice campaigner Kate Isaacs. Her campaigns to limit explicit content that objectifies women for entertainment and profit was met with videos being made using her image. These “deepfake” videos digitally superimpose her face over other actors to create a false sense that she compromised her own moral standards.

On the 20th of October 2022, the BBC reported that Indonesia has banned the sale of all children’s cough syrups after 99 children died from kidney failure. It was discovered that high levels of illegal toxins existed in the contaminated medications. Officials fear that the exact number of deaths is unknown as the syrups had wide circulation.

On the 17th of October 2022, the BBC reported on the discovery of 92 unclothed migrant men most from Syria and Afghanistan, many of whom had injuries. They were found on the border between Turkey and Greece by Greek police. They were documented by the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, who are investigating the matter. The men are thought to have crossed the Evros river in rubber dinghies.

As the cost-of-living crisis intensifies in Britain, attention has turned to the scale of hunger affecting children in the country. Various media outlets have reported that child hunger is one of the biggest challenges facing schools in the UK. According to the Guardian paper, headteachers and food aid charities have said that they are struggling to cope with growing demand from families unable to afford food.
