The Hasina-Biden ‘Selfie’ Exposes the Moral Tragedy of Secular Politics

The political arena of Bangladesh spiced up quickly after a picture went viral in social media that showed US President Joe Biden taking a selfie with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India's capital New Delhi for the G20 Summit. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said that BNP could not sleep after seeing US President Joe Biden’s selfie with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said it was a huge setback for BNP as the party became terribly upset. He thought that the US was no longer with BNP.

On the other hand, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly criticized the enthusiasm exhibited by Awami League leaders regarding Sheikh Hasina's selfie with US Joe Biden, suggesting that they should hang this selfie around their necks. He said Sheikh Hasina's selfie with the US president will not help her government to hang onto power.

This ‘selfie moment’ has exposed the real bankrupt character of the secular leaders in Bangladesh. Ruling party feels blessed to get that moment with the leader of their Western lord just like a happy dog wags its tail excitedly. And on the other hand, the main opposition party is whining like a frightened dog, fearing to be missed out from its master’s mercy before the upcoming election.

Most importantly this selfie incident revealed the moral tragedy of secular democratic politics. People knows that the leader of the so-called free world, the “champion of Democracy”, Joe Biden’s tears for ‘democratic backsliding’ in Bangladesh are all fake. He is imposing various punitive measures against Hasina government for abusing rights, and at the same time taking heartwarming selfie with tyrant Hasina! On the other side, Sheikh Hasina frequently accuses US to create unstable situation in Bangladesh on pleas of fair election and democracy so that they can use the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, but was literally begging for that selfie with Biden to show the people that her relations with US is no longer strained. All the players of democracy are heightening their hypocrisy to levels never seen.

O People! This is the crux of secular democracy which is deep rooted in deceit and hypocrisy. The slavish rulers in this system are willing to sell their souls to their Western masters for political expediency; and democracy’s global moral leader America along with other Western leaders never hesitate to sacrifice their professed democratic and humanitarian values for their heinous geopolitical interests. The only way to be liberated from this politics of slavery and the tentacles of Western hegemony is to uproot the existing secular democratic system from our land and bring back the true guardianship of the Muslims – the Khilafah Rashidah (rightly-guided Caliphate) on the method of Prophethood.
