The Polemic of Bon Odori

Some weeks ago, there was a hot issue concerning the Bon Odori Festival, a festival of Japanese origin that was held at the National Sports Complex. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Idris Ahmad, advised Muslims not to participate in the festival because it contains elements of another religion. The Mufti of the State of Penang also added that such festivals are feared to lead to shirk.

The High Court on Wednesday (9/6/22) ruled it unlawful for the Home Affairs Minister to strip dual nationals of their Australian citizenship under section 36B of the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 (Commonwealth), which also applies to children aged 14 to 18. The High Court decision will better protect the rights of dependent children of suspected foreign fighters charged under Australia's counter-terrorism laws, advocates say.
